Just two days after theater-heavy TV hit Glee came out of the awards' season gate swinging with four Golden Globe nominations, the show added yet another nod to the list: a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. The actors' union released the list of nominees for its 16th annual awards on December 17 in anticipation of the ceremony's live broadcast on TNT on January 23, 2010.
The new Rob Marshall-helmed Nine followed its five Globe nominations with two SAG nods, one for Penelope Cruz (Outstanding Supporting Actress) and one for the entire cast (Outstanding Ensemble).
Glee and Nine weren't the only two honorees with a stage pedigree. Season four of Showtime series Dexter, starring Broadway's Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas and Tony Award winner John Lithgow, nabbed three nominations; the cast of new comedy Modern Family, featuring Broadway alum Jesse Tyler-Ferguson, was honored opposite Glee for Outstanding Ensemble; sleek phenomenon Mad Men, featuring regular Rialto player Bryan Batt, picked up another two noms; and Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen, who starred together in Broadway's 2009 debut of Impressionism, recieved individual nominations for their small screen reunion in Georgia O'Keeffe.
Other familiar theater names who received SAG Award nominations include Helen Mirren for The Last Station, Kevin Kline for Cyrano de Bergerac, Jessica Lange for Grey Gardens, Glenn Close for Damages, Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock, Christina Applegate for Samantha Who? and Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie.
