Katharine Cornell ranked as one of the greatest theatrical divas of the 20th century, but because she didn’t appear in movies, her fame has faded. Prolific playwright A.R. Gurney remembers “Kit,” however, and he’s turned a real-life backstage meeting with the actress in 1948 into the delightful new comedy The Grand Manner. The play (currently running at Lincoln Center Theater's Mitzi Newhouse Theater) stars Kate Burton as Cornell, Boyd Gaines as her director husband Guthrie McClintic, Bobby Steggert as “Pete” (based on the youthful Gurney) and Brenda Wehle as Gert, Cornell’s business manager and close friend. The cast, director Mark Lamos and the 80-years-young playwright recently chatted about the show with Broadway.com. Take a look, then get tickets for a satisfying summer stage treat!
