With the recent announcement that the bomb 1988 musical adapation of Stephen King's Carrie is readying to return to the New York stage, we wanted to know what other flop musicals you wish you had a time machine to go back and see. The votes are in, and fans are just crazy about Breakfast at Tiffany's. The short-lived 1966 musical adaptation of the popular Truman Capote novella and its subsequent film version, starring Audrey Hepburn, pulled in 26% of votes. The musical, which featured a score by Bob Merrill and starred Mary Tyler Moore as Holly Golightly, played only four preview performances at the Majestic Theatre before closing without ever officially opening.
Tony-winning A Chorus Line composer Marvin Hamlisch has something to grin about, as there's still interest in his 1987 flop, Smile. The pageant-themed musical, which closed after 48 performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, followed closely in second place with 23% of votes. Third place went to another misguided musical adaptation of a film, 1991's Nick & Nora, with 10% of votes. Based on the popular The Thin Man film series, the musical starred Joanna Gleason, Barry Bostwick and Christine Baranski, but languished in an unusually long preview period (71 performances) before finally opening, then closing after only nine shows.
