Four-time Tony nominee Raul Esparza is considering a new line of work: writer. The actor, who will finish the Los Angeles run of new musical Leap of Faith on October 24, talked to The Los Angeles Times about his stage history and future ambitions. On the horizon? Writing his family’s story.
"I'm clearing the slate, cleaning house a little bit. I'm just giving myself a few months to see what the future holds. I'm thinking that it might be time to take a look at my own life and my own family story and histories and see what I can share. I've been considering writing some of my own work. Maybe tell my parents' stories," Esparza, who was born in Delaware and raised in Miami, tells the Times about his Cuban-born parents.
Esparza received Tony nominations for Speed the Plow, The Homecoming, Company and Taboo (becoming only the second actor to be nominated in all four acting categories). His other Broadway credits include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Cabaret and The Rocky Horror Show. He has also appeared in Anyone Can Whistle at Encores! and off-Broadway in The Normal Heart, Comedians and tick, tick . . . BOOM!
In addition to chatting about his desire to write about his family, Esparza discusses his hope that Leap of Faith, in which he stars opposite Brooke Shields at the Ahmanson Theatre, will have a Broadway berth and his vow to stay with the show.
