A week before Halloween, we asked Broadway.com readers to send in photos of their best Broadway-themed costumes. After an overwhelming response, we compiled a finalist list of 13 creative costumes and asked fans to vote for their favorite. The polls are now closed, and it looks like readers were singing "Welcome to the '60s" as their votes propelled Kevin Brown's take on hot Hairspray mama Edna Turnblad to the top.
"For my big 40th birthday, I wanted to be larger than life, and what better character than Edna Turnblad?" Brown said. "I had a good friend of mine make the dress for me. Trying to find the '60s print dress fabric was a bit of a challenge, but I finally found something that closely resembled the original."
Brown even made a fan of the show's original Tony-winning Edna, Harvey Fierstein. "Months after my party I saw Harvey in a touring production of Fiddler on the Roof. I waited for him after the show for a picture and autograph. I showed him my dress and he smiled!"
Landing in the poll's runner-up spots are Ryan Nolin (who dressed as George from Sunday in the Park with George) and Kearyn Vos (who took on Wicked's green girl Elphaba). Thanks to everyone who voted and submitted costumes!
