Simon Paisley Day will play Petruchio opposite Samantha Spiro as Katherina in The Taming of the Shrew at Shakespeare’s Globe. Performances will begin on June 23, directed by Toby Frow. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
In this Shakespearean screwball comedy, two wealthy sisters in Padua must be married off. The modest, demure Bianca has no shortage of suitors, but who on earth will take the wild, ungovernable, shrewish Katherina? Only the gold-digging Petruchio, a man as maddeningly strong-willed and perverse as Katherina herself, is equal to the task of bullying her to the altar.
Day’s recent theatre credits include Malvolio in Twelfth Night (National Theatre), Private Lives (Vaudeville Theatre and on Broadway) and The Ugly One (Royal Court). His television credits include Doc Martin, Sherlock, Hustle and Being Human.
