There’s a Dogfight reunion brewing in Oz! Broadway newcomer Derek Klena will make his debut as Fiyero in Wicked beginning May 28. He’ll star opposite the show’s incoming Elphaba Lindsay Mendez, with whom Klena starred in the off-Broadway musical Dogfight in 2012 (directed by Wicked helmer Joe Mantello).
Klena joins Mendez in a cast that includes Katie Rose Clarke as Glinda, Randy Danson as Madame Morrible, Adam Grupper as The Wizard, Catherine Charlebois as Nessarose, F. Michael Haynie as Boq and John Schiappa as Dr. Dillamond. Current Fiyero portrayer Kyle Dean Massey will play his last performance on May 26, as will outgoing Elphie Willemijn Verkiak.
Klena’s New York stage credits include Dogfight at Second Stage Theatre and Tommy Ross in MCC’s 2012 revival of Carrie. His impressive regional resume includes Hairspray, Glory Days, Happy Days, Cinderella, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Big River.
