The passionate love affair between Thomas Jefferson and 19th century Italian singer and composer Maria Cosway will come alive in More Between Heaven and Earth, starring Campbell Scott and Melissa Errico. The theater piece with music, written and directed by Erica Gould, will be staged for one night only on December 8 at the historic 18th century Fraunces Tavern.
More Between Heaven and Earth tells the story of the widowed Jefferson and the recently married Cosway, who met in Paris and continued a passionate correspondence for nearly 40 years. The play features text from real-life letters that Jefferson and Cosway sent one another, music the pair heard together in Paris, and songs that Cosway personally composed for Jefferson. The evening will feature performances by soprano Jessica Gould and tenor Tony Boutte, in addition to Scott and Errico.
Built in 1719, the Fraunces Tavern is the oldest surviving structure in Manhattan. It housed the US Department of Foreign Affairs while Jefferson was Secretary of State, and he wrote several letters to Cosway there. More Between Heaven and Earth features works by Corelli, Cosway, Duphly, Hewitt and Sacchini. Errico starred alongside Kathleen Chalfant and Matthew Modine in a 2011 production of the play at the Abigail Adams Smith Auditorium in New York City.
Scott’s Broadway credits include Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Hay Fever, The Real thing, The Queen and the Rebels and Ah, Wilderness! His film and TV credits include The Amazing Spider-Man, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Roger Dodger, The Spanish Prisoner and Royal Pains.
Errico garnered a Tony nomination for Amour. Her other Broadway credits include Anna Karenina, My Fair Lady, High Society, Dracula, the Musical and White Christmas. Her recent TV appearances include Blue Bloods and The Good Wife.
