John Logan, author of the Tony-winning Red, will collaborate with punk rock singer-songwriter Patti Smith on a series based on her 2010 memoir Just Kids, reports Deadline. The two will co-write and co-produce the limited series for Showtime.
This isn’t Logan’s first project with Showtime; he also created Penny Dreadful. In addition to Red, his Broadway credits include I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers and the book of The Last Ship. He received Oscar nods for the screenplays of Hugo, The Aviator and Gladiator. According to Deadline, Logan and Smith began conceptualizing the project after she attended a performance of Red.
Just Kids explores Smith’s ever-changing relationship with the late Robert Mapplethorpe, the controversial artist, from paramours to collaborators to lifelong friends after he came out as gay. The two went on to find success with their respective crafts in New York.
