Here’s a quick roundup of stories you might have missed.
Don't You Wanna Stay Up Late
Pitch Perfect's Anna Camp, original Hamilton cast member Jasmine Cephas Jones, Finn Jones and Martin Marquez are set to star in the New York premiere of the wildly popular 2:22 – A Ghost Story, Danny Robins’ play about a woman who thinks her house is haunted, and her husband who is less convinced. The production, directed by Matthew Dunster, will begin performances on October 20 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, where it opens on November 5 and will play for 13 weeks. The title comes from the group's desire to stay awake until 2:22, when (perhaps) the truth about their strange and frightening experiences will be revealed. Note that the show's illusions are by Chris Fisher of Stranger Things: The First Shadow and Harry Potter and The Cursed Child fame, so let the jump scares ensue.
Election Day
Nic Ashe, Gideon Glick, Kelvin Moon Loh, Sawyer Smith and Adina Verson. are joining the previously announced Wayne Brady in Tarell Alvin McCraney and Tina Landau's Ms. Blakk for President at off-Broadway's Vineyard Theatre. The show follows Joan Jett Blakk—the first (and only) Black drag queen candidate for President of the United States of America. It’s the early '90s, the height of the AIDS epidemic, and Joan and the newly formed Queer Nation Chicago set off on an exhilarating and dangerous journey to drag queer politics out of the closet—and onto the floor of the DNC. Inspired—but not bound—by the true story of drag performer and activist Terence Alan Smith, the show is described as "a joyous stampede through urgent and unfinished business." The production, directed by Landau, will begin performances on October 15 and open on November 1.
New York’s Hottest Club
Ain't no party like a musical theater party! The Bilingual Broadway Collective is introducing MT Mixtape, a new dance party where musical theater meets nightlife. Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) star Christiani Pitts and Emma Sofia of Cats: The Jellicle Ball are special guests for the first event on August 27 at the United Palace. Hosted by Luis E. Mora and Michael Anthony Sylvester, this high-energy celebration mixes iconic Broadway anthems, cult favorites and today's musical theater hits into a night of singing, dancing and community. The DJ set is by Brett Tubbs.
And You Shall Receive
TV legend Marilu Henner and Stranger Things' Shannon Purser will star in The Ask, a new play by Matthew Freeman, directed by Jessi D. Hill. Henner is a five-time Golden Globe nominee for Taxi and has appeared on Broadway in Chicago, Gettin the Band Back Together, Grease and more, while Purser is best known for her role as Barb on Netflix's Stranger Things. In The Ask, a donor meeting in an Upper West Side apartment erupts into a gripping battle of wills. Performances begin October 6 at Theater 555, with opening night set for October 13. The limited engagement runs through November 22.
