OPERA OUT OF FASHION AT GLOBES?
For a night of high fashion and high drama, look no further than the Golden Globe Awards on NBC (If you're looking for pre-show coverage, skip phony Star Jones and follow Joan and Melissa Rivers over on the TV Guide Channel for the dish). The big disappointment of the night for some theater fans will be the expected lackluster showing for the much-maligned film version of The Phantom of the Opera, which is set to come up empty-handed despite three nominations. In fact, according to GoldDerby.com, Phantom has just about the least chance of winning Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) of the five nominees (Vegas odds say the overrated Sideways will take the gold). Phantom starlet Emmy Rossum (left) has a slightly better chance of winning Best Actress, but those in the know are saying the 18-year-old up-and-comer will simply have to settle for being gorgeous, talented and on the rise!
The 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards airs live on NBC starting at 8PM. Click for more info!

SHOW PEOPLE SING FOR SHOW PEOPLE
For their first-ever Show People Magazine in Concert event tonight, the people behind the glossy bimonthly (which currently features the fab Dirty Rotten Scoundrels duo of Norbert Leo Butz and John Lithgow on its cover) have pulled together an eclectic line-up of stage stars. Making her first appearance as a mom will be the incomparable Daphne Rubin-Vega (left), who will share the bill with La Cage aux Folles's Gavin Creel (with songwriting partner Robbie Roth) and Kevin Cahoon--the recent standout from The Foreigner--with his band Ghetto Cowboy. Warning to theatergoers who don't usually find themselves among the downtown rock 'n' roll scene: You gotta stand!
Show People Magazine in Concert plays at Irving Plaza, 17 Irving Place, at 8PM. Tickets are $30. Click for more info!

NEW DAD FOR DALLAS IN A NUMBER
Caryl Churchill's acclaimed play A Number (which Broadway.com critic Eric Grode called "tender, terrifying and extraordinary") continues its sold-out run at New York Theatre Workshop with a change in the two-person cast. Replacing Sam Shepard as Salter, a man who cloned his son thirty years in the past, is Arliss Howard, who's a pretty great actor himself (and husband to Debra Winger!) Dallas Roberts, who will next been seen on Broadway in The Glass Menagerie remains in the role of the conflicted son. Thankfully, the cast change has freed up some tickets for the now-extended run, which is great news to audience members who've been clamoring for seats to this gotta-see-it show.
A Number plays at New York Theatre Workshop, 79 East 4th Street. Click for more info!

SNIPER SHOOTS FOR NYC SUCCESS
After hit runs in Los Angeles and New Jersey, Bonnie Culver's Sniper premieres at off-off-Broadway's Center Stage. Based on the true-life story of Anthony Barbaro, a seemingly normal teenager in upstate New York who went on a shooting spree from a third floor window of his high school in 1974, killing three and wounding nine more. Rutgers grad John O'Brien (left) makes his New York debut in the lead role, heading a cast of eight under the direction of Adam Hill.
Sniper plays at Center Stage, 48 West 21st Street, through February 12. Click for more info!

CRITICS DIGEST FIDDLER'S NEW TEVYE AND GOLDE
"Do you love me?" Harvey Fierstein's Tevye will ask Andrea Martin's Golde at tonight's re-opening night performance of Fiddler on the Roof as critics dot the Is and cross the Ts on their Friday morning reviews. Here's hoping the first-nighters will appreciate David Leveaux's vision a bit more this time out as well as the work of the two first-rate leads who now call Anatevka home. After the show, the cast will celebrate at a special invite-only party in the theater district. Would Broadway.com miss the chance to toast Fierstein on the biggest Broadway musical role of his career? Not on your life!
Fiddler on the Roof plays at the Minskoff Theatre, 200 West 45th Street. Click for tickets and more info!

PHANTOM HITS THE MALLS OF AMERICA
After a month of limited release, Joel Schumacher's cinematic take on The Phantom of the Opera will finally get a chance to test its mainstream appeal when the film hits theaters coast-to-coast today. Despite mixed reviews, the $70 million film has already brought in about $25 million domestically and more than $35 million overseas, which would seem to indicate that it will at least wind up breaking even (take that, rubberneckers!) One more thing is sure-regardless of its performance this weekend, Phantom seems assured to knock Yentl and earn its place on the list of top ten movie musicals. Then again, Popeye also has a spot on that list! Now bring on Dreamgirls and Rent!
The Phantom of the Opera is playing at a theater near you. Visit Hollywood.com for showtimes and tickets.
