MTC Readies Works by Shanley, Hatcher & Cruz
Doubt, which is likely to open the Stage I season in November, takes place in 1964 at a Bronx junior high school run by a formidable nun. Doug Hughes currently represented on Broadway by Frozen will direct.
A Picasso is set in Paris during the height of the German Occupation. The play centers on Miss Fischer, who has been hired by the Gestapo to interrogate the great Pablo Picasso regarding the authenticity of three paintings left behind by people fleeing the regime. A Picasso received Philadelphia's Barrymore Award for Excellence in Theatre for Outstanding New Play 2003. It recently ended a run at Florida's Coconut Grove Playhouse with Lucie Arnaz appearing as Fischer.
Beauty of the Father recently completed its world premiere engagement at Seattle Repertory Theatre. Set on Spain's Costa del Sol, the play centers on a young woman, Marina, who reunites with her estranged artist father, Emiliano. As she discovers both her father's work and his world, Marina begins to understand why her mother fell in love with him, but not why he left. An earthy Spanish woman, a handsome young Moroccan and the spirit of Federico García Lorca are also involved in the plot.
MTC is also presenting Reckless in a co-production with Second Stage Theater and Brooklyn Boy a co-production with California's South Coast Repertory on Broadway during the 2004-2005 season. One Broadway and one off-Broadway play are still to be announced for the season.
