West End's Modern Millie to Close June 26

Thoroughly Modern Millie will end its Broadway run on June 20, and less than a week later, the West End production of the Tony Award-winning musical will shut down. Millie will play its final performance at London's Shaftesbury Theatre on June 26.

Thoroughly Modern Millie brings to life a world of flappers bobbing their hair, raised hemlines and women entering the workforce and rewriting the rules of love. Based on the film of the same name, the musical features a book by Richard Morris and Dick Scanlan, music by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics by Scanlan.

The tuner, directed by Michael Mayer, opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 21 to mixed to negative notices. Benedict Nightingale of The London Times wrote: "Yes, Amanda Holden is appealing as the girl from the sticks, Maureen Lipman amusing as a white slaver, Jeanine Tesori's music hummable, Dick Scanlan's lyrics literate, the 1920s atmosphere pleasant. But the thin, rather corny, story left me yearning for a bite of Les Mis or, even better, a big wallow in Anything Goes."

Millie currently stars Holden in the title role, Shelia Ferguson as Muzzy van Hossmere and Anita Dobon as Mrs. Meers.
