San Fran's Magic Theater Debuts Sex & People
The Opposite of Sex features music and lyrics by Douglas J. Cohen and a book by Robert Jess Roth and Douglas J. Cohen and is based on Don Roos' screenplay for the 1998 film of the same name. The Opposite of Sex is about a 16 year-old girl with a dead stepfather and an emotionally unstable mother. She decides to make a break for it, moves in with her gay half-brother and seduces his hot boyfriend. Directed by Roth Beauty and the Beast, the show is scheduled to run from September 25 through October 24 before a possible Broadway berth.
The Right Kind of People, which will be directed by Chris Smith and run from November 13 through December 12, is a biting send-up of so-called high society. Issues of race, gender, and social status simmer just beneath the surface of this contemporary comedy of manners set in the cooperative board of Fifth Avenue 's most fashionable high-rise.
During its 2004-2005 season, the Magic Theater will also present American premieres of Rebecca Gilman's The Sweetest Swing in Baseball January 22 - February 20 and Wesley Moore's A Reckoning February 26 - March 27. In addition, there will be a festival entitled, The Hot House, which will be composed of three world premieres in repertory: John Belluso's The Rules of Charity, Victor Lodato's 3F 4F and Betty Shamieh's The Black Eyed. the Hot House will run from April 23 through June 19.
