Sam Shepard to Star in A Number Off-B'way

Sam Shepard will star opposite Peter Sarsgaard in the New York Theatre Workshop production of Caryl Churchill's A Number. The show is scheduled to begin previews at the off-Broadway theater on November 16.
Shepard is an actor, screenwriter, director and playwright. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 for his three-act play Buried Child. His other plays include Angel City, Curse of the Starving Class, Killer's Head, Action, The Mad Dog Blues, Cowboy Mouth, True West, Operation Sidewinder, Fool for Love, A Lie of the Mind, Simpatico, The Rock Garden, Tongues and The Late Henry Moss. As an actor, Shepard received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting performance in The Right Stuff. His other film credits include Renaldo and Clara, Days of Heaven, Resurrection, Raggedy Man, Frances, Country, Crimes of the Heart, Baby Boom, Steel Magnolias, Defenseless, Thunderheart, Bright Angel, Voyager, The Pelican Brief, Snow Falling on Cedars, Hamlet, All the Pretty Horses, The Pledge, Swordfish, Black Hawk Down and the feature adaptation of his play Fool for Love. He can also be seen in The Notebook, opening June 25. Shepard has not acted in a stage production in many years.

A Number centers on Bernard Sarsgaard, a man who comes to tell his father Shepard some shocking news. The play premiered at the Royal Court in 2002 and was rumored for a Broadway transfer. However, a production on the Great White Way never materialized and the NYTW mounting will mark A Number's New York debut. A Number, directed by James MacDonald, is scheduled to end its limited engagement on January 16, 2005.
