NYTW Replaces Marriage with Hedda Gabler

New York Theater Workshop has canceled its planned stage adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's film, Scenes From a Marriage, but announced director Ivo van Hove and star Elizabeth Marvel will still work with the company. The duo will collaborate on a new production of Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, which will run downtown from September 10 through October 24.
Hedda Gabler is the story of the newlywed Hedda Tesman Marvel who finds herself bored with married life to her scholar husband, George Tesman. As the daughter of General Gabler, she had grown accustomed to the freedom and exciting social world of her father's home. When her rival, Mrs. Elvsted, reenters her life with Hedda's former lover, Eilert Lovberg in tow, Hedda sets out on a shocking path of destruction that affects the lives of everyone around her.

In addition to Hedda Gabler, NYTW will also present Caryl Churchill's A Number and Eyewitness Blues, a collaboration by Steven Sapp, Mildred Ruiz and musicians Paul Thompson and Carlos Pimentel, as part of its 2004-2005 season. NYTW still has 2004-2005 season slots open. Under consideration are a world premiere dance piece by Martha Clarke whose Vienna: Lusthaus revisited ran at NYTW called The Pirandello Project and The Seven, a new show by Will Power Flow to be directed by Jo Bonney.
