It's official. As previously mentioned, the upcoming Monty Python musical Spamalot will be housed at Broadway's Shubert Theatre. Broadway previews are scheduled to begin on February 7 in preparation for a March 10 opening. David Hyde Pierce, Tim Curry and Hank Azaria are set to star in the musical comedy, a production spokesperson confirmed.
Spamalot, which is being billed as "lovingly ripped-off" from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, will feature a book by Eric Idle based on the screenplay he co-wrote with fellow Monty Python creators Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin and music and lyrics by Idle and John Du Prez. The stage show will also include three songs from the 1975 Monty Python and the Holy Grail film.
Directed by Mike Nichols and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, Spamalot will arrive on the Great White Way after a tryout at Chicago's Shubert Theatre, where it is scheduled to run December 21 through January 16.
