Broadway.com has learned that Tony-nominated actor Daniel McDonald has signed on to play Sam Carmichael, the main man of incoming lead Carolee Carmello's Donna Sheridan, in Mamma Mia! starting on October 20. That same day David Beach will begin performances as Harry Bright, one of the other men whose arrival sets the show's plot in motion.
McDonald was nominated for a Tony Award and won a Theatre World Award for his starring role in the musical Steel Pier. He has also appeared on the Great White Way in High Society. His off-Broadway credits include Our Place in Time and First Night.
Beach currently plays Father Alexandrios in Mamma Mia! and also understudies the role of Harry. He previously appeared on Broadway in Moon Over Buffalo and Urinetown. His off-Broadway credits include Modigliana, That's Life! and Urinetown.
Mamma Mia! will welcome many new cast members to the Winter Garden Theatre on October 20. In addition to those mentioned above, tour star Sara Kramer is set to take over the role of Sophie Sheridan and Liz McCartney and Judy McLane will begin performances as Donna's Dynamos, Rosie and Tonya respectively.
Mamma Mia! currently stars Dee Hoty as Donna Sheridan, Jenny Fellner as Sophie Sheridan, Harriett D. Foy as Rosie, Tamara Bernier as Tanya, Joe Machota as Sky, John Hillner as Sam, Adam LeFevre as Bill and Michael Winther as Harry. All will play their final performance on October 18.
A production spokesperson could not confirm any of the new casting for Mamma Mia!.
