Kirk Acevedo and Rosemarie DeWitt will star in Second Stage Theatre's production of John Patrick Shanley's Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. The play, directed by Leigh Silverman, is scheduled to run from October 21 through December 5.
Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is set in a rundown bar where two of society's rejects, Danny and Roberta, are drinking beer when they strike up a conversation. He is a brooding, self-loathing young man who resorts more to violence than reason; she is a divorced, guilt-ridden young woman. Danny, whose fellow truck drivers call him "the beast," seems incapable of tender emotion, while Roberta, still haunted by an earlier ugly sexual incident, is distrustful of men in general. And yet, as their initial reserve begins to melt, the possibility of a genuine and meaningful relationship begins to emerge.
Acevedo is best known for playing Alvarez on the acclaimed HBO series Oz. Cable ACE Award nomination. Acevedo received a Drama Desk Award nomination for his performance in Second Stage's 1997 production of Sam Shepard's Tooth of Crime. His other notable credits include the film The Thin Red Line and the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.
DeWitt was featured last season in the Obie Award-winning ensemble of Small Tragedy. Her other Gotham stage credits include Anonymous, Dead Reckoning, Plummet, The Group, A Lifetime of Reasons and Clash by Night.
Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is scheduled to officially open on November 10.
