Nathan Lane, not Richard Dreyfuss as previously announced, will star in the West End production of The Producers. According to an official statement, Dreyfuss, who had been in rehearsals for some time, is unable "to continue performing the role of Max Bialystock in the show at present, due to the effect of the physical demands of the show upon pre-existing injuries."
Lane won a Tony Award for his performance as Bialystock in the Broadway mounting of the hit musical. He returned to the show for a limited engagement earlier this year with original co-star Matthew Broderick. The duo will also star together in The Producers film, which begins shooting in February. Lane has only agreed to star in the West End mounting through January 8.
Dreyfuss had surgery for a herniated disc in January and also suffered from the reoccurrence of a shoulder injury, making it difficult for him perform. "The producers are grateful to Mr. Dreyfuss for his artistry and all his work on their behalf, and hope that he will be able to rejoin the company when his physical condition permits," a statement read.
The West End mounting of The Producers, co-starring Lee Evans as Leo Bloom, will go ahead on schedule, beginning performances at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on October 22.
