A musical version of the M.M. Kaye novel The Far Pavilions is coming to the West End this spring. The show, directed by Gale Edwards, will begin previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre currently home to Bat Boy on March 24 in preparation for an April 14 opening, according to Variety.
Set against India's fight for independence from the English, The Far Pavilions tells the story of an Englishman, Ashton Pelham-Martyn, brought up as a Hindu, and his forbidden relationship with an Indian princess, Anjuli. The book earned great acclaim when it was released in 1978 and spawned a 1984 miniseries with Ben Cross and Amy Irving.
The musical version of The Far Pavilions, designed by Lez Brotherston, will feature music by Philip Henderson and book and lyrics by Stephen Clark co-lyricist of Martin Guerre.
