Sarah Uriarte Berry Joins Broadway Cast of Light in the Piazza

Sarah Uriarte Berry will join Victoria Clark and Kelli O'Hara in the upcoming Lincoln Center Theater production of the Adam Guettel/Craig Lucas musical The Light in the Piazza. She will play bitter Italian wife Franca, a role played in all previous mountings by O'Hara.

Berry is playing the title role in New York City Opera's production of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein's Cinderella, beginning performances this week. She has previously appeared on Broadway in Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast and Taboo. She also starred in the tour of the Royal National Theater's production of Carousel and appeared in the pre-Broadway tryout of Thoroughly Modern Millie, in which she played Dorothy.

Based on the 1960 novel by Elizabeth Spencer, The Light in the Piazza unfolds in Florence and Rome in the summer of 1953. Margaret Johnson, the wife of a successful American businessman, is traveling abroad with her daughter Clara, a beautiful young woman who is not all that she seems. Clara's chance encounter with a young Italian develops into a passionate love affair that Margaret opposes for reasons only she understands.

The Light in the Piazza, directed by Bartlett Sher, is scheduled to begin performances at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on March 17 in preparation for an April 18 opening.
