Assembled by Victoria Brittain and Gillian Slovo and directed by Nicolas Kent and Sacha Wares, Guantanamo was commissioned from an idea by Nicolas Kent by the Tricycle Theatre in January 2004. The five Guantánamo detainees, whose interviews are the centerpiece of the play, were released in late February. Their interviews were conducted at the end of March and beginning of April 2004.
Guantanamo: Honor Bound To Defend Freedom opened off-Broadway on August 26. In his Broadway.com Review of the piece, William Stevenson wrote: "If you're not already angry at the Bush administration, Guantanamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom should do the trick. First staged in London, where it continues to be a hit, it's compiled from the words of British detainees, their family members and lawyers, and political figures. Victoria Brittain and Gillian Slovo have assembled the material expertly, showing how innocent people are being denied their civil liberties while being held at Guantanamo indefinitely. The outstanding actors put human faces on the situation, revealing the devastating effects of prolonged imprisonment."
