New Group Books 37 Arts for Hurlyburly Spring Transfer

The New Group will transfer its hit production of David Rabe's Hurlyburly to 37 Arts for a 12-week limited engagement beginning on April 4. The play would be the first theatrical offering at 37 Arts.

Set in the cocaine-and-sex-infused Hollywood Hills of the mid-1980s, Hurlyburly is Rabe's brutally comic reflection on the decade of decadence. Led by Ethan Hawke as Eddie, the New Group company also features Bobby Cannavale, Josh Hamilton, Catherine Kellner, Parker Posey, Wallace Shawn and Halley Wegryn Gross.

The show, directed by Scott Elliott, opened to mostly positive reviews at Theatre Row's Acorn Theatre on January 27. It was quickly rumored for a Broadway transfer, but formal plans for the move were never announced. The mounting is scheduled to end its sold-out run at the Acorn on March 19.

Set to house three off-Broadway theaters, 37 Arts was originally scheduled to open in late summer. The shows The Immigrant and Shockheaded Peter were announced for the space, but they both ended up at different venues. While industry professionals have taken tours of the complex in various stages of development, the theaters were never officially finished.

A spokesperson for Hurlyburly could not confirm any plans for a transfer.
