Set in Belfast in the 1970s and 1980s, Belfast Blues is one wee girl's story of family, war, Jesus and Hollywood. In the show, Hughes portrays 24 different characters, ranging from her parents and neighbors to most importantly her younger self.
The show, with Carol Kane as a contributing director, officially opened off-Broadway on January 20. In his Broadway.com Review of the piece, Ron Lasko wrote: "Hughes has already won numerous awards including an Ovation Award, a Garland Award and an L.A. Weekly Award, and it is easy to see why. She imbues this story about the effects of war and poverty with such an immense amount of warmth, charm and unbridled spirit that you would almost swear it was a comedy. It is truly a tour-de-force performance… Ultimately, Belfast Blues couldn't be more timely. As a new era of democratic elections dawns in war-torn Iraq, Belfast Blues offers further hope that something good can come out of conflict."
