White was born on March 24, 1922, in Inverness, Nova Scotia. She began her career as a dancer, making her professional debut with the San Francisco Opera Ballet. She made her Broadway debut in Finian's Rainbow in 1948. She also performed on the Great White Way in Regina, Arms and the Girl, Guys and Dolls and Silk Stockings. She started choreographing in the mid-1950s and her first Broadway credit was the revival of Finian's Rainbow. She went on to earn Tony nominations for her choreography in The Music Man, Whoop-Up, Take Me Along, Irma La douce, Half a Sixpence, Mame, Illya Darling and I Love My Wife. Her other Broadway choreography credits include Let It Ride, I Had A Ball, 1776, Gantry which she also directed, 70, Girls, 70, Gigi, Goodtime Charley and Working.
White is survived by two children and two grandchildren.
