Charles Weldon Replaces Ernie Hudson in Birdie Blue Off-B'way

Charles Weldon is replacing previously announced cast member Ernie Hudson in the Second Stage Theatre production of Cheryl L. West's Birdie Blue. S. Epatha Merkerson and Billy Porter also continue star in the show. No reason was given for the departure of Hudson, who left before rehearsals commenced.

Weldon appeared on Broadway in The River Niger, which was presented by the Negro Ensemble Company. His work with that company also includes mountings of The Great MacDaddy, The Offering, The Brownsville Raid and A Soldier's Play. His film credits include Serpico, The River Niger, Stir Crazy, Malcolm X and Clockin' Green. He began his career as lead singer in the Paradons, writing and recording the hit, "Diamonds and Pearls."

In Birdie Blue Merkerson plays the title character, a tough, funny and big-hearted woman. Times are tougher than ever, but Birdie welcomes us in, tells it like it is and then does what she has to in this reflection on love, marriage and the passage of time.

The play, directed by Seret Scott, will begin previews on June 2 a change from the originally scheduled May 31 start date and open on June 23.
