A Soldier's Play centers on a murder investigation on a Louisiana Army base during World War II. The victim is a brutal, self-hating black soldier, Sergeant Vernon Waters McDaniel. The investigator sent by the Army is, for that era, a rarity: a black officer Diggs, who must square off against Waters' white commander Pasquale.
A recent graduate of The Juilliard School, Campbell was featured in the remake of The Manchurian Candidate and has a small role in War of the Worlds. Colter was featured in Million Dollar Baby as Big Willie Little, the aspiring champion who leaves his longtime manager, Frankie Dunn played by Clint Eastwood, in the beginning of the film. Ellis is a series regular on The Inside. Forbich previously appeared off-Broadway in Rose Rage. Johnson's theatrical credits include Fences, A Lesson Before Dying, Light Raise the Roof, Lobby Hero, Native Son, The Piano Lesson and No Place to Be Somebody. McDaniel, who appeared on Broadway in Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, is best known for playing Lt. Arthur Fancy on NYPD Blue.
