Carmen: The Musical Eyes Broadway Berth Next Season

A new tuner based on Prosper Mérimée's classic 1845 novel Carmen is eyeing a Broadway berth during the 2006-2007 season. Carmen: The Musical will feature music by John Ewbank, book and choreography by Sarah Miles and direction by Franco Dragone.

The story of Carmen centers on the title character, a beautiful woman who attracts the attention of a Spanish soldier, who deserts his regime to be with her. However, she is not faithful and the solider, mad with jealousy and rage, kills her. Carmen: The Musical will utilize Flamenco dancing and music to tell the story.

Ewbank is a European composer who has turned out hit records in the Netherlands and whose work can also be heard in the scores for numerous movies. Miles performed on Broadway in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and served as assistant choreographer on Jerry's Girls, the 1995 Company revival, Victor/Victoria and the 1996 staging of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Dragone is best known for his work with Cirque du Soleil, directing Nouvelle Experience, Alegria, Quidam, La Nouba, Mystère and O.

Carmen: The Musical is expected to have a workshop later this year.
