Set in America in the late 19th century, Boston Marriage explores class, sexuality and love through the intimate relationship of two women. It centers on the strained bond between Claire Pidgeon and Anna Steenburgen, who discuss their relationship for the entire play. The only other character is a maid Silverstone that sometimes interrupts the conversation. The show derives its name from a term used in the 1800s to apply to two women who live together, absent of male support.
