The musical is set in Louisiana in 1963 and centers on Caroline, a black maid who works for a Jewish family. Through her intimate story, the musical aims to portray the painful changing rhythms of a nation.
Caroline, or Change premiered off-Broadway at the Public Theater in the fall of 2003. After that run, it moved to Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre where the musical played from April 13, 2004 to August 29, 2004. It was nominated for six Tony Awards, with featured actress Anika Noni Rose was the only one to take home Tony gold.
