One Heart at a Time features music by Louis St. Louis known on Broadway as an actor as well as a musical director/arranger, lyrics by Mark St. Germain whose play The God Committee will soon be seen off-Broadway and Thomas W. Jones and a book by Germain. The story begins in 1905, just as Carver, a Tuskegee professor world renowned for his agricultural discoveries, receives a visit from Sarah Headley, who arrives to convince him to allow a film celebrating his achievements. Sarah challenges him to solve the mysteries and come to terms with the terrors of his past. At the same time, Carver finds himself having to decide what he believes to be the best means to achieve progress for black Americans.
