Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to Fly on the Stage

Will Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon be hitting the stage? Powerhouse producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein have acquired the rights to convert the acclaimed 2000 film into a theatrical piece, according to Variety.

An epic set against the breathtaking landscapes of ancient China, the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is based on the book by Du Lu Wang, which is part of a five-novel cycle known in China as the Crane-Iron Pentalogy. The Weinsteins have also acquired the rights to turn the other novels in the cycle into motion pictures. The plot centers on two warriors searching for a magic sword. Their journey leads them to an amazingly athletic daughter of a nobleman. The film, directed by recent Oscar winner Ang Lee, was known for its complicated martial arts choreography, which was created by Yuen Wo-Ping.

Harvey Weinstein told Variety the stage Crouching Tiger, which will feature top martial artists, will be a "combination spectacle and musical with a cohesive [storyline]." He added: "Theater audiences should have high expectations for the spectacle that this extraordinary material can bring to the stage, and I think this is an opportunity to create something revolutionary."
