Chamberlain and Mills Out of Pond Tour; Tom Bosley and Michael Learned to Star

Richard Chamberlain and Haley Mills will not star in the national tour of Ernest Thompson's On Golden Pond as previously announced. Instead Tom Bosley and Michael Learned will headline the production.

"Chamberlain left for person reasons," a production spokesperson told Broadway.com. "Because the whole show is about the chemistry between the two stars, a decision was made to recast both of the roles."

Bosley landed his first off-Broadway role in 1955 in Jean Anouilh's Thieves' Carnival. Four years later, he made the leap to Broadway, landing the title role in the musical Fiorello!. He won a 1960 Featured Actor Tony Award for his performance in the tuner. His other Broadway credits include Nowhere to Go But Up, Natural Affection, A Murderer Among Us, Catch Me if You Can, and The Education of H*Y*M*A*N*K*A*P*L*A*N and Beauty and the Beast. Bosley's career extends well beyond the stage. He made his film debut in 1963 as Natalie Wood's suitor Anthony Colombo in Love With the Proper Stranger. He is best known as television's Howard Cunningham on the popular sitcom Happy Days. He also starred in his own weekly series, The Father Dowling Mysteries, from 1989 through 1991. His other television credits include a recurring role as Cabot Cove sheriff Amos Tupper on Murder, She Wrote.

Learned has appeared on the Great White Way in The Three Sisters, The Loves of Anatol, The Sisters Rosensweig and Gore Vidal's The Best Man. Like Bosley, she is best known for her work on the small screen. She rose to fame in the early 1970s playing Olivia Walton on The Waltons. She received six Emmy Award nominations for her work in the drama, winning two of those for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In the 1980s she starred in the series Nurse, winning a third Emmy Award.

On Golden Pond tells the story of the lovable curmudgeon Norman Thayer Jr., Bosley and his spirited wife, Ethel Learned—a couple whose final summer at their lakeside cottage in Maine is interrupted by the arrival of their estranged daughter and her fiancé's young son.

The 30-week tour, directed by Leonard Foglia, is scheduled to launch September 5 at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas.
