A stage musical version of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the successful 1994 movie, will hit Australia this fall. The show, titled simply Priscilla Queen of the Desert, is set to begin performances at Star City Casino's Lyric Theater in Sydney on October 7, according to Variety.
The plot of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert centers on two drag queens and a transsexual who are hired to perform a drag show in a remote part of the Australian desert. They board a lavender bus and head to the locale, but the trip does not go according to plan. Stephan Elliott wrote and directed the film.
Elliott and Allan Scott are writing the libretto for the stage show. The musical is expected to feature six or seven new tunes and some of the hit songs used in the film, including "I Will Survive" and "I Love the Nightlife." The film's costume designer, Lizzie Gardiner who won an Oscar for her work, will reprise her duties for the stage. Melbourne Theater Company Artistic Director Simon Phillips will helm the production.
