Well, which began advertising "Last Weeks" in mid-April, has announced a May 14 end date. At the time it closes, the unusually structured piece, written by and starring Lisa Kron, will have played 23 previews and 53 regular performances at the Longacre Theatre.
Well opens with Kron's mother Jayne Houdyshell sitting on a La-Z-Boy recliner in the middle of the stage. As the play goes on to deal with Kron's personal experiences of healing, a comedic coup d'état breaks out. The actors critique the script, her memories conflict with her flashbacks, her mother interrupts with her own opinions, and Kron finds herself in danger of losing control.
Well, directed by Leigh Silverman, had a successful run at the Public Theater before moving to midtown. It opened at the Longacre Theatre on April 30 to mostly positive reviews, with Houdyshell earning raves and multiple award nominations. In his Broadway.com Review of the piece, William Stevenson wrote: "While Kron's unusual structure or lack thereof makes Well daring, it's her affectionate portrayal of her relationship with her mother that makes the work affecting... Well may not resemble conventional dramas, but it's often hilarious, always clever and ultimately touching."
The show has been struggling at the box office—two weeks ago, it brought in only $120,977.
