Tony Winner Doubt to End Broadway Run on July 2

John Patrick Shanley's Doubt, winner of the 2005 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize, will end its Broadway run on July 2. At the time it closes, it will have played 25 previews and 525 regular performances at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

Set against the backdrop of a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, Doubt is the story of a strong-minded woman faced with a difficult decision. Should she voice concerns about one of her male colleagues…even if she's not entirely certain of the truth?

The Manhattan Theatre Club production of the show transferred to Broadway from City Center's Stage I. It opened on the Great White Way on March 9, 2005 to positive reviews. In his Broadway.com Review of the drama, Eric Grode wrote "Doubt is Broadway's most satisfying drama since Copenhagen, a terrific entertainment that challenges and comforts at the same time."

Since it opened, the show has gone through a major cast change. Cherry Jones who won a Tony Award for her work in Doubt, Brian F. O'Byrne and Heather Goldenhersh departed and were replaced by Eileen Atkins, Ron Eldard and Jena Malone, respectively. Original cast member Adriane Lenox, who also won a Tony for her performance in the play, remains.

Doubt's Broadway run turned a profit and the show will have a national tour, headlined by Jones, starting September 2006 at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles.
