High School Musical's Zac Efron to Play Link in Hairspray Film

High School Musical's Zac Efron will again star in a high-school based tuner—he is set to play Link Larkin in the big screen adaptation of Hairspray. He joins previously reported stars Nicole Blonsky, John Travolta, Queen Latifah and Amanda Bynes in the film.

Efron is best known for starring as Troy Bolton in the wildly popular Disney television movie High School Musical. The singing voice that is heard in the picture is not all Efron's—his voice was blended with that of another actor. However for Hairspray, he alone will croon Link's numbers. Prior to High School Musical, Efron had a recurring role on the series Summerland. His regional theater credits include productions of the musicals Gypsy, Little Shop of Horrors and The Music Man.

The Hairspray film, directed by Adam Shankman, is expected to begin production in Baltimore and Toronto in September. Release is set for summer 2007.
