Revival of The Guys Starring Tom Wopat Begins 9/11

Tom Wopat is headlining two weeks of commemorative performances of Anne Nelson's The Guys, which is scheduled to run at The Flea Theater from September 11 through September 23. Directed by Thomas Kail, the performances bring back a script that has been produced in 46 states and 10 countries since its January 2002 premiere at The Flea, an off-Broadway theater located just blocks away from the World Trade Center site. A film version starred Anthony LaPaglia and Sigourney Weaver, wife of Flea Artistic Director Jim Simpson, who directed the original production with Weaver and Bill Murray.

Wopat stars as Nick, a fire captain who lost his crew of men on 9/11. Grace Gonglewski plays Joan modeled on playwright Nelson, a journalist who helps him write the eulogies he must deliver in the wake of the terrorist attacks. Matinee performances and some evening shows will feature Tim Cummings and Irene Walsh, who played the roles during the original run five years ago. Wopat also appeared in the original production opposite Amy Irving.

Wopat appeared in the 2005 Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross. Other Broadway credits include 42nd Street, Annie Get Your Gun, Chicago, Guys and Dolls, City of Angels and I Love My Wife.

Nelson has been a journalist, Columbia University professor and director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, a human rights organization. Since turning to theater with The Guys, she has written the play Savages and received a Guggenheim Fellowship for a book on anti-Nazi resistance in Berlin, to be published by Random House.
