The off-Broadway production of Gutenberg! The Musical! has announced a 10-week extension at The Actors' Playhouse. Originally scheduled to close March 25, the show will now continue its run through June 3.
Written by Anthony King and and Scott Brown and directed by Alex Timbers, Gutenberg! The Musical! currently stars Jeremy Shamos and David Turner.
In this two-man musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers' audition for their new project, a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud Davenport Turner and Doug Simon Shamos sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, in hopes that one of the producers in attendance will give them a Broadway contract, fulfilling their ill-advised dreams.
Gutenberg! The Musical! marks the first off-Broadway transfer for the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, where it was originally developed in 2003. UCBT showcased an excerpt at the 2005 New York Musical Theatre Festival as part of the NYMF Comedy Series. Gutenberg! The Musical! had its world premiere at The Jermyn Street Theatre in London in January 2006. The U.S. premiere was presented at the 2006 New York Musical Theatre Festival. A limited run followed at 59E59 Theaters. The musical then transferred to The Actors' Playhouse, where it began performances on January 16.
The company of Gutenberg! The Musical! also includes Ryan Karels. Robert Meffe is the musical director.
