The Public Theater will produce a developmental production of Winter Miller's In Darfur from April 13-29. The show, directed by Joanna Settle, is considered a work in progress and will not be reviewed; 20 percent of the $15 ticket price will be donated to organizations working on behalf of Darfur.
In Darfur explores the current humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan, by telling of three intertwined lives at a camp for internally displaced persons. The story follows an aid worker's mission to save and protect lives, a journalist's pursuit to deliver a "Page One" story and a Darfuri woman's quest for safety.
Miller is a research assistant to New York Times Nicholas Kristof, who had reported extensively on genocide in Darfur. She accompanied Kristof and NBC's Ann Curry on a trip to Darfur in 2006. Her other works include The Penetration Play, Cake and Ice Cream: Greetings from Vietnam, Wish You Were Here and a series of short plays including Darfur, Sudan and Partylines.
The Public will offer a series of post-show discussions, "Conversations on Darfur," for audiences to learn more about the situation in Darfur from aid workers, activists and journalists, including Curry and Mia Farrow.
