The hit West End stage version of The 39 Steps, currently playing at the Criterion Theatre, is heading to Broadway. Before premiering on the Great White Way, the Olivier Award-winning comedy will have its U.S. premiere at Boston's Huntington Theatre Company in September.
The 39 Steps will play at the Huntington from September 14 to October 14, 2007. "After its American premiere at the Huntington, The 39 Steps will be produced on Broadway by Bob Boyett," London producer Edward Snape confirmed to Theatre.com.
Four actors playing 150 roles perform the show, based on John Buchanan's novel and the 1935 Alfred Hitchock film thriller. It contains every single scene from the film, including the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge, the first theatrical bi-plane crash ever staged and the death-defying finale set in the London Palladium. Adapted by Patrick Barlow and directed by Maria Aitken, it won the award for Best New Comedy at this year's Laurence Olivier Awards.
