Off-Broadway's Gutenberg! The Musical! will play its final performance at the Actors' Playhouse on May 6, according to Variety. At the time of closing, Anthony King and Scott Brown's musical will have played a total of 159 regular shows and 14 previews.
In Gutenberg! The Musical!, a pair of aspiring playwrights, Bud Davenport and Doug Simon, perform a backers' audition for their new project, a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them a Broadway contract-fulfilling their ill-advised dreams.
After finishing its successful original six-week limited engagement at 59E59 Theaters last fall, the show began a commercial run at the Actors' Playhouse on January 16, 2007, which was scheduled to end on June 3. Just this week, the tuner received nominations for the Lucille Lortel Awards, the Outer Critics Circle Awards and the Drama Desks.
The two-man company of Gutenberg! currently features David Turner and Darren Goldstein.
