Director Daniel Sullivan suffered four fractured ribs and a collapsed lung Tuesday after falling through a trap door on the stage of the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Sullivan was in the first day of technical rehearsals for the Public Theater's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which was set to begin previews on August 7 and run through September 9. For the moment, the Public has not announced any changes in the show's performance schedule. According to a production spokesperson, "We expect a speedy recovery and are optimistic that he will be back in rehearsal in a couple of days."
The cast of Sullivan's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream includes Jason Antoon Snout Keith David Oberon, Mireille Enos Hermia, John Michael Hill Puck Austin Lysy Lysander, Tim Blake Nelson Quince, Daniel Oreskes Theseus, Martha Plimpton Helena, Laila Robins Titania, Jay O. Sanders Bottom and Elliot Villar Demetrius.
Sullivan has been nominated for Tony Awards six times and was awarded the Tony for his direction of Proof in 2001. His most recent Broadway production was the Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of Prelude to a Kiss; other recent credits include Rabbit Hole on Broadway and David Hare's Stuff Happens at the Public. He will direct the forthcoming Broadway revival of The Homecoming starring Ian McShane, Raul Esparza and Michael McKean. From 1984-1997, Sullivan served the Artistic Director of the Seattle Repertory Theater and directed more than 60 productions. Next season he will serve as Acting Artistic Director of Manhattan Theatre Club when Lynne Meadow goes on sabbatical.
