New York Theatre Workshop will kick off its fall season with Ivo van Hove's production of Molière's
The Misanthrope in a new version by Tony Harrison. The play will begin performances on September 13 and open at the company's off-Broadway home on September 24.
The cast of The Misanthrope includes Quincy Tyler Bernstine Eliante, Jason C. Brown Clitandre, Bill Camp Alceste, Florencia Lozano Arsinoe, Joan MacIntosh Acaste, Alfredo Narciso Oronte, Thomas Jay Ryan Philinte and Jeanine Serralles Celimene.
Van Hove and his longtime collaborator, designer Jan Versweyveld, won Obie Awards for their work on NYTW's 2004 production of Hedda Gabler. As with that classic play, van Hove seeks to revitalize The Misanthrope with a fresh, modern perspective, viewing Molière's classic comedy through the lens of our society in which the traditional social fabric has frayed and virtual relationships can be deleted with the push of a button. Other productions with New York Theatre Workshop include Alice in Bed 2001, A Streetcar Named Desire 1999, and More Stately Mansions 1997.
Production design for The Misanthrope is by Jan Versweyveld, costume design by Emilio Sosa, sound design by Raul Vincent Enriquez and video design by Tal Yarden.
