The film version of Sweeney Todd won the 2008 Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, with leading man Johnny Depp winning in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.
Because of the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America, the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards telecast was cancelled, with the winners instead read off during an hour-long NBC special hosted by Billy Bush and Nancy O'Dell.
A critical hit, Sweeney Todd has yet to become a smash at the box office. In 24 days of release, the R-rated musical thriller has earned $44 million to date, just below the film's budget estimated at $50 million.
