Some of the theatrical world's brightest young stars—including Jonathan Groff, Dan Fogler, Mamie Gummer and Zoe Kazan—have been tapped by superstar director Ang Lee for roles in Taking Woodstock, which begins production late this month, according to Variety. Produced by Focus Features, the film will star Emile Hirsch, Imelda Staunton and Liev Schreiber.
Taking Woodstock is an adaptation of the memoir of Elliot Tiber, one of the organizers of the historic 1969 music festival in upstate New York. The script has been written by James Schamus. Demetri Martin The Daily Show With Jon Stewart will play Tiber, and Spring Awakening alum Groff who will depart the Central Park production of Hair early to begin work on the film has been cast as Woodstock organizer Michael Lang.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan Grey's Anatomy is set to play a closeted married man having an affair with Tiber, while Paul Dano There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine and Zoe Kazan Come Back, Little Sheba play a hippie couple attending the concert. Dan Fogler Tony winner for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will play a local theater troupe head, and Mamie Gummer Les Liaisons Dangereuses has been cast as Lang's assistant.
According to a listing for the film on the Internet Movie Database website, the cast will also include theater vets Kevin Chamberlin Chicago, The Ritz and Jeremy Shamos 100 Saints You Should Know.
