Architect and designer David Rockwell, whose varied credits include the sets for Broadway shows such as
Legally Blonde, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Rocky Horror Show and the Tony-nominated
Hairspray, has been tapped to design sets for the 2009 Academy Awards
. The Oscar broadcast is scheduled for February 22 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
First-time Oscar producer Laurence Mark and executive producer Bill Condon noted that Rockwell is uniquely qualified to work in the show's venue since his design firm, the Rockwell Group, designed the 3,500-seat theater. "David is an innovator who possesses the outstanding combination of truly firsthand knowledge of the Kodak Theatre and superb design work in a variety of realms, including film and theater," said Mark and Condon in a joint statement. "We're pleased to be collaborating with someone whose talents are so diverse."
"I think we'll see things never seen before at the Oscars," Rockwell told the Associated Press. "One of the things about the Oscars is there are such thrilling possibilities. It is one of the great kind of communal rituals of the entire world."
