The Broadway revival of David Mamet's
American Buffalo will close on November 23 at the Belasco Theatre unless ticket sales improve. Starring John Leguizamo, Cedric the Entertainer and Haley Joel Osment, the production began previews on October 31 and opened on November 17, directed by Robert Falls.
American Buffalo tells the story of a trio of small-time crooks who come to blows over a plan to steal a valuable buffalo nickel. The play premiered off-Broadway in 1976 and won the 1977 Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best American Play. Al Pacino appeared in a 1981 off-Broadway revival as the elder crook, known as "Teach," and William H. Macy played the role in a 2000 revival at Atlantic Theater Company, founded by Macy and Mamet. Dustin Hoffman played the role in a 1996 film version of the play.
Produced by Elliott Martin, Ben Sprecher, Louise Forlenza, Wendy Federman and Nelle Nugent,
American Buffalo is one of two star-studded revivals of Mamet plays to open on Broadway this fall;
Speed-the-Plow, starring Jeremy Piven, Raul Esparza and Elisabeth Moss, continues its run at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
