Broadway’s Eden Espinosa, best known for leading roles in hits like Wicked and Rent, has joined the cast of the forthcoming Broadway revival of Hair as flower-poweress Sheila. The production, originally scheduled to begin previews at the Al Hirschfeld Theater on February 10 and open March 5, has been pushed back to “accommodate the logistics of the new producing partnership.” The show will now begin performances at the Hirschfeld beginning March 6, with opening night set for March 31. Additional casting will be announced shortly.
Hair also announced the addition of producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel, who will team with the Public Theater as co-producers for the Public’s transfer of the show. The pair replace previously announced lead producer Elizabeth I. McCann, who worked with the Public last season to bring its transfer of Passing Strange to the Rialto. McCann will remain onboard with Hair, though no official title or reason for producing changes have been released at this time.
Richards and Frankel are currently represented on Broadway by Tony Award winners including August: Osage County and Spring Awakening, as well the currently running Speed-the-Plow and forthcoming Reasons to be Pretty.
The acclaimed and much extended revival of Hair, which ran this past summer at the Delacorte Theater as part of the Public’s Shakespeare in the Park program, features direction by Diane Paulus, sets by Scott Pask, costumes by Michael McDonald, choreography by Karole Armitage and sound design by Acme Sound Partners. Kevin Adams is slated to join the production as lighting designer.
